IMaToP

Project information
Tomato plays an important role in European agriculture, both from a social and economic view. In the last years, tomato crop is facing hard challenges due to problems in productivity, competitiveness and profitability. Furthermore, climate changes are jeopardizing EU agricultural products. ICT tools could play an important role in this sector. High quality is a must in horticultural products in addition water shortage increases. Thus precise agriculture technologies monitoring air and soil temperature and humidity provide a useful decision support and help farmers to better manage production, reducing energy and water consumption and assuring a product of high quality. The main problem farmers are facing with is the lack of efficient management practices in tomato production, consisting mainly in optimal irrigation and precise harvest time. Temperature, soil and air humidity are the most important parameters to be monitored during tomatoes’ growth. Tomatoes irrigation is one of the most important farming practices, a good monitoring of water irrigation strongly influencing the yield and the quality of the final product, reducing rotting. In this context, future agriculture knowledge management systems could give a support not only to agriculture and environmental protection but also to all other related activities, allowing collaboration among groups in agro-food sector, consumers, public authorities and stakeholders. To that end IMaToP project aims at helping growers make appropriate and timely decisions, developing a decision web-based system using wireless sensors and tag to monitor and control air and soil condition in real time, mobile data collection and alarms. Through IMaToP App farmers will be able to take correcting actions to avoid waste from deteriorated or immature product increasing own profitability from tomato growing business. The system will be based on FIWARE and FIspace platforms.
