DEFORMAP project
The DEFORMAP project is an EPA (Environmental Protection Agency, Ireland) funded project based at the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences (BEES), University College Cork (UCC). Researchers at BEES are collaborating with the EPA and the Forest Service, Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, to investigate deforestation mapping and estimation in Ireland. Through photointerpretation of available imagery, and digitization of official records of deforestation, the DEFORMAP will produce a national deforestation map for the period 2000 – 2012. Advanced GIS, remote sensing and ground surveys are being used to assess current and novel deforestation estimation methods. Ultimately, this research will report on trends in forest-related land-use change during the period 2000 – 2012.
