DEVELOPMENT AND INTEGRATION OF METHODOLOGIES AND TOOLS AIMING IMPROVEMENT OF WATER AND ENERGY USE IN IRRIGATION

"THIS PROPOSAL IS BASED ON THE EXPERIENCE ACQUIRED IN THE RESEARCH PROJECTS ""SUSTAINABILITY IN THE WATER AND ENERGY USE IN IRRIGATION SYSTEMS. PET2008-0175"" (2009-2011) AND ""ACTIONS TO IMPROVE ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN IRRIGATED AREAS. AGL2011-30328-C02-01 ""(2012-2014). IN THESE PROJECT WERE DEVELOPED, CALIBRATED AND VALIDATED METHODOLOGIES AND SOFTWARE FOR IMPROVING THE ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN IRRIGATION SYSTEMS, COLLECTIVE PRESSURIZED IRRIGATION NETWORKS AND PUMPING SYSTEMS. THESE TOOLS SHOWED THE POTENTIAL FOR ENERGY SAVINGS IN THE IRRIGATION SECTOR, ALONG WITH IMPROVING THE EFFICIENCY IN THE WATER USE. ALSO, THE RESULTS OBTAINED IN THESE PROJECTS HIGHLIGHTED THE NEED TO ADDRESS THE CHALLENGE OF THE HOLISTIC CALCULATION AND REDUCTION OF THE WATER AND CARBON FOOTPRINTS IN IRRIGATION. THIS CHALLENGE HAS TRADITIONALLY DEALT WITH VERY GENERAL PERSPECTIVES AND INACCURATE RESULTS, SO IT IS NECESSARY TO DRAW A RELIABLE METHODOLOGY TO OBTAIN BETTER AND ACCURATE ESTIMATIONS, AS WELL AS IDENTIFYING THE BEST OPTIONS FOR THEIR REDUCTION ACCORDING TO ENVIRONMENTAL, ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL POINTS OF VIEW. IT WILL BE DEVELOPED A WEB-BASED TOOL THAT PERMITS ANY FARM TO DETERMINE THE WATER AND CARBON FOOTPRINTS IN AN ACCURATE MANNER. IN ADDITION, THE TOOL WILL DETECT, BASED IN A EXPERT SYSTEM TO AUTOMATICALLY DETECT IMPROVEMENT ACTIONS FROM AVAILABLE DATA. THE DISSEMINATION PROCESS WILL BE PERFORMED BY PUBLISHING IN SCIENTIFIC AND OTHER JOURNALS, AND THROUGH A CONFERENCE IN WHICH ALL THE STAKEHOLDERS WILL ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE. ALL THE DEVELOPMENTS OF THIS SUBPROJECT WILL BE CALIBRATED AND VALIDATED IN 7 FARMS PRESELECTED IN SUCH A MANNER THAT REPRESENTS ACCURATELY THE REALITY OF THE MANCHA ORIENTAL AQUIFER. THIS AQUIFER SUPPORTS 110,000 HA OF IRRIGABLE LAND. IN ADDITION, IT WILL PARTICIPATE AS STAKEHOLDERS THE JUNTA CENTRAL DE REGANTES DE LA MANCHA ORIENTAL, WHICH WILL FACILITATE THE TRANSFERENCE TO FINAL USERS, AS WELL AS ENTERPRISES AS INTERMALTA S.A., WHICH IS A MALT PRODUCER, AND COOPAMAN SCL, WHICH IS A COOPERATIVE THAT JOINTS 6 OTHER COOPERATIVES THAT AIMS PRODUCTION, PROCESSING, AND DISTRIBUTION OF GARLIC. BOTH ENTERPRISES ARE INTERESTED IN THE RESULTS OF THE PROJECT. THE CONSOLIDATED RESEARCH GROUP UCLM-CREA SUPPORT THE PROMOTION OF YOUNG RESEARCHERS WITH FRUITFUL RESEARCH ACTIVITIES. THUS, TOGETHER WITH A SENIOR RESEARCHER, THIS PROJECT WILL BE LEADED BY A YOUNG RESEARCHER, THAT WILL ENSURE THE DEVELOPMENT OF TASK AND THE MAINTENANCE OF THE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE OTHER RESEARCHING GROUP IN THE FUTURE. THE MAIN SCIENTIFIC OBJECTIVES OF THIS SUBPROJECT ARE: 1 HOLISTIC ESTIMATION OF THE WATER AND CARBON FOOTPRINTS IN IRRIGATION AND IMPROVEMENT MEASURES FOR THEIR REDUCTION. 2. DEVELOPMENT OF A WEB GIS TOOL TO ACCOUNT FOR THE WATER AND CARBON FOOTPRINTS AND ESTIMATION OF THEIR POTENTIAL REDUCTIONS. "
