REDUCTION OF THE ENERGY DEPENDENCE OF IRRIGATED AREAS USING PREDICTIVE SYSTEMS AND SOLAR ENERGY

Project information
"THIS PROPOSAL IS BASED ON THE EXPERIENCE ACQUIRED IN THE RESEARCH PROJECTS ""SUSTAINABILITY IN THE WATER AND ENERGY USE IN IRRIGATION SYSTEMS. PET2008-0175"" (2009-2011) AND ""ACTIONS TO IMPROVE ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN IRRIGATED AREAS. AGL2011-30328-C02-01 ""(2012-2014). THERE WERE DEVELOPED, CALIBRATED AND VALIDATED METHODOLOGIES AND SOFTWARE FOR IMPROVING THE ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN IRRIGATION SYSTEMS, COLLECTIVE PRESSURIZED IRRIGATION NETWORKS AND PUMPING SYSTEMS. THESE TOOLS SHOWED THE POTENTIAL FOR ENERGY SAVINGS IN THE IRRIGATION SECTOR, ALONG WITH IMPROVING THE EFFICIENCY IN THE WATER USE. BUT THE MAIN LIMITATION OF PREVIOUS WORK LIES IN THE FACT THAT IN THE DESIGN OF ENERGY SAVING MEASURES, PAST TIME SERIES DATA ARE USED. HOWEVER, TO BE TRULY EFFECTIVE, IT IS NECESSARY THAT THE SYSTEM WAS ABLE TO PREDICT THE BEHAVIOR OF FARMERS AND THUS PROVIDE IN REAL-TIME THE MOST SUITABLE MANAGEMENT MEASURE FOR EACH DAY OF THE IRRIGATION SEASON. A PREDICTIVE SYSTEM BASED ON THE KNOWLEDGE OF CROP ROTATIONS, LOCAL FARMERS PRACTICES AND WEATHER FORECASTS, WOULD BE USEFUL FOR MANAGERS OF IRRIGATION COMMUNITIES AS A EFFECTIVE TOOL FOR WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT. AT THE SAME TIME, THIS ISSUE IS LINKED TO THE NEED FOR CLEAN ENERGY SOURCES TO REDUCE BOTH THE COST OF THE WATER SUPPLY AND THE CARBON FOOTPRINT OF IRRIGATION SECTOR.IN RECENT YEARS, THE ENERGY AND POWER COSTS HAVE BEEN DRAMATICALLY INCREASED WHILE THE COST OF SOLAR PANELS HAS BEEN DRASTICALLY REDUCED. THUS, PHOTOVOLTAIC ENERGY IS NOWADAYS A PROMISING SOLUTION FOR THE IRRIGATION SUPPLY. THUS, THE PROPOSAL IS THE INTEGRATION AND GENERATION OF NEW ALGORITHMS, MODELS AND TOOLS THAT ALLOW, IN A SIMPLE AND ACCURATE WAY, THE DETERMINATION OF THE WATER AND CARBON FOOTPRINTS AND PROPOSE MEASURES TO REDUCE THE OVERALL ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT IN IRRIGATION. THIS IS A JOINT PROPOSAL WITH UCLM (UNIVERSIDAD DE CASTILLA LA MANCHA) WHO WILL FOCUS ON LINKING MODELS (PUMPING, IRRIGATION SYSTEMS AND CROPPING PATTERNS) IN A GLOBAL TOOL FOR CALCULATING AND IMPROVING THE CARBON AND WATER FOOTPRINTS IN SAMPLE FARMS. THE UCO TEAM WILL WORK ON THE INTEGRATION OF SOLAR IN IRRIGATION, CLEARLY LINKED TO THE REDUCTION OF THE CARBON FOOTPRINT, IN ADDITION TO IMPROVING THE MANAGEMENT OF WATER NETWORKS, MAINLY THROUGH THE PREDICTION OF THE IRRIGATION DEMAND AND ENERGY OPTIMIZATION MODELS. EVERYTHING WILL BE LINKED ON A WEB TOOL DEVELOP BY UCLM. THE GLOBAL PROPOSAL (UCO+UCLM), WHICH FOCUSES ON THE EFFICIENT USE OF WATER, ENERGY AND RAW MATERIALS, IS DIVIDED INTO THREE INTERCONNECTED SECTIONS: 1) INTEGRATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF TOOLS FOR THE CALCULATION THE REDUCTION OF THE WATER AND CARBON FOOTPRINTS IN THE IRRIGATION SECTOR; 2) INTEGRATION OF RENEWABLE ENERGY, PARTICULARLY SOLAR ENERGY, IN IRRIGATION; 3) BETTER WATER DISTRIBUTION NETWORKS MANAGEMENT THROUGH ENERGY OPTIMIZATION AND PREDICTIVE SYSTEMS.
