SUSTAINABILTY OF ECOSYSTEM SERVICES PROVIDED BY TOP SCAVENGERS: INTEGRATING MOVEMENT ECOLOGY, POPULATION MODELLING AND STAKEHOLDER PERCEPTION

Project information
TRADITIONAL PASTURE BASED LIVESTOCK FARMING SYSTEMS SUPPORT IMPORTANT BIODIVERSITY VALUES AND ECOLOGICAL PROCESSES. THESE SOCIECOLOGICAL SYSTEMS ALLOW FOR THE MAINTENANCE OF TOP SCAVENGERS AND THE ECOSYSTEM SERVICES (ECONOMIC AND ENERGETIC) THAT THEY PROVIDE TO STAKEHOLDERS AND THE SOCIETY. THE SUSTAINABILITY OF THESE SYSTEMS MIGHT BE JEOPARDIZED BY THE CONFLICTS RELATED TO THE DIFFERENTIAL PERCEPTION AND VALUATION OF THE SPECIALIZED (OBLIGATE SCAVENGERS, IE VULTURES) VERSUS THE UNSPECIALIZED (FACULTATIVE SCAVENGERS, IE PREDATORS) SPECIES OF THE SCAVENGER GUILD THAT PROVIDE WITH CONTRASTING SERVICES AND DISSERVICES. THUS, THE STUDY OF THE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN SCAVENGERS AND STAKEHOLDERS, THE PERCEPTION AND VALUATION OF THE ECOSYSTEM SERVICES THAT LINK THEM AND THE VIABILITY OF THE POPULATIONS OF TOP SCAVENGERS AND TRADITIONAL LIVESTOCK FARMING IS NEEDED TO EVALUATE THE SUSTAINABILITY OF THE SYSTEM. FOOD AVAILABILITY AND HUMAN-WILDLIFE CONFLICTS ARE AMONG THE MAIN FACTORS THAT MIGHT INFLUENCE THE SUSTAINABILITY OF THE SYSTEM. FOOD AVAILABILITY INFLUENCES THE CARRYING CAPACITY OF THE POPULATIONS OF SCAVENGERS AND IS MOSTLY RELATED TO THE BIOMASS OF CARCASSES OF PASTURE BASED LIVESTOCK. IN RECENT YEARS, THESE RESOURCES HAVE BEEN SUBJECT TO SHIFTS RELATED TO THE CHANGES IN SANITARY POLICIES AND THE REGRESSIVE TREND OF TRADITIONAL LIVESTOCK. BESIDES, EMERGENT RISKS ASSOCIATED TO THE USE OF VERTERINARY HARMACEUTICALS MAY AFFECT THE ECOSYSTEM SERVICES PROVIDERS. WE WILL BENEFIT FROM A MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH AND INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGICAL TOOLS (GPS TRANSMITTERS,) AND CONCEPTUAL (MOVEMENT ECOLOGY, SOCIOECOLOGICAL RESEARCH AND COMPUTATIONAL MODELLING) FRAMEWORK TO EVALUATE THE SUSTAINABILITY OF THE TRADITIONAL PASTURE BASED LIVESTOCK FARMS AND THE GLOBALLY ENDANGERED TOP-SCAVENGERS.
