Description:

History
Tekirdağ Viticulture Research Instute was established in 1930 to promote the regional grapevine sector with propagation of American grapevine rootstocks for re-establishing vineyards.
The institution had mainly focused on rootstock production until scientific research studies based on projects started in 1958. The institute started to conduct projects in collaboration with other institutes to find solutions to all production problems in 1979. Tekirdağ Viticulture Research Instıtute aimed on to promote the viticultural structure via ongoing research and development, education and production activities.

Activities
National Collection Vineyard had been established by planting 1435 grapevine genotypes for the evaluation, identification and preservation of grapevine genetic sources of Turkey.
Catalogue of Grapevine Genetic Sources of Turkey was published.
Molecular identifications of these local grapevine genetic sources had been made made within the bilateral project of Ankara University.
Standard grape varieties for grape growing areas of Turkey were evaluated.
Clone selection studies on 15 major grape varieties were completed and motherstock parcels were established with superior clones.
Studies were conducted on to select suitable trellis systems for various varieties and locations. The local utilization of trellis system due to bud fertilities of grapes was encouraged.
Totally sixteen new table grape cvs. (Trakya İlkeren, Tekirdağ Çekirdeksizi, Barış, Güz Üzümü, Reçel Üzümü, Güz Gülü, Bozbey, Tekirdağ Sultanı, Tekirdağ Misketi, Gönülçelen, Özer Beyazı, Cengizbey, Süleymanpaşa Beyazı, Gürnil, Kebeli, Emirali ) were released via crossbreeding programs for developing early or late season seedless table grapes.
Local grape varieties grown without fungicide spraying at the coastal area of Northeastern Anatolia had been used in disease tolerant grape breeding program. Powdery mildew tolerant grape cv. Özer Karası with good wine quality was released from this program.
Marker assisted selection and embryo rescue operation have been utilized to improve seedlessness at F1 individuals from crossing studies.
Meristem culture and thermotherapy had been combined for the production of virus free plantlets. Shoot tip culture is also used for micropropagation.
The income of the production of table grape varieties are tried to increase by post harvest storage techniques.
The researches were conducted to evaluate the bioecological adaptability of table grape varieties to Marmara Region conditions. Further researches were carried on different ecologies. Storage and marketing problems were also investigated.
Superior local grape genotypes for wine production were selected from National Collection Vineyard after chemical and sensorial analysis and experimental vineyards including selected ones had been established for further studies.
As viniculture has a great production potential in Thrace region, adaptation tests of local and foreign varieties, the effect of growing conditions on grape and wine quality were studied.
Multidisciplinary research project aiming the improvement of organic farming were completed in the district of Silivri and Gökçeada Island.
Research and production studies on technology of grape products have been done to increase income provided by grapes. In this context, several grape varieties were processed for grape juice; physical, chemical and sensory quality properties of grape juice samples were determined. The data from these studies had been evaluated in terms of producer, consumer and technology and presented to manufacturers to engage in the sector.
Grape processing facility with 50 to 60 ton capacity was established in 2007. The studies on harvest time and processing techniques for making best grape juice had been continued. Studies were continued on to produce healthy grape leaves for consumption.
The research and development activities have been performing to ensure grapevine leaves that is special important for Turkish cuisine.
The studies have been initiated for the separation the seeds from grape marc and for the processing techniques of the material that are rich in phenolic compounds.
Ata Oral Technology center with the Tissue Cultures, Biotechnology, Food Technology and Plant Protection labs that equipped with high technology devices was opened in 2014.
Irrigation programs for important grape cvs. and the effects of deficit irrigation on fertility and quality have been determined. Drought tolerance of grapes is being studied under the prediction of global climate change.
Applications that contribute to yield and quality of grafted vine and American vine rootstocks were evaluated and developed continuously
Mother plants of grape varieties that we are responsible according to certification program were evaluated, tested against pest and diseases, the production of pre basic and basic materials started in the screenhouses. Hydroponic system have been established for rapid production of healthy propagation material .
As a result of project focused on alternative spraying methods and the applicability in the viticulture, new tunnel type sprayer was designed.
According to the project conducted in collaboration with the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture, short courses were organized for local farmers. Wire, stake, rootstock and other supplies were distributed to encourage growers for using trellis system.
The WORKSHOP of VISION 2023 VITICULTURE to determine the targets of 100. anniversary of the Rebublic foundation was organized by the TVRS and the sector book was pressed.
Besides viticulture activities, 80.000 m2 area are reserved for the research opportunities for fruit growing.
94 research projects were completed from 1958 till 2016.
21 research projects are still continuing and 8 new projects will start in 2017.
