Copernico Srl is a design company based in Montalcino that has been operating in the Tuscan territory for over twenty years in the design field for wineries and technical services for the Tuscan companies of the integrated water service and for some years it has developed research and innovation processes in agriculture, in collaboration with research organizations, trade associations and private companies. Currently, among structured collaborators and members, Copernico Srl counts ten professionals and it has collaborations with other firms and professionals, specialized in the technical services sectors. In order to improve services and to increase the quality, it has founded two joint-stock companies: the first recently established "Atelier Territorio Srl" based in Florence, which deals with architectural design and consists of a team of architects only; the second one "Lands Consulting Srl" is the company dealing with software development related to research and innovation in agriculture.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES
Copernico has already started for years, R&D activities on new services concerning precision agriculture.
Firstly, it focused its activities on the realization of an innovative territorial system for the digitalization of the entire company.
In 2016 he worked as a direct investor within the project Sub-measure 16.2 of the PIF Montalcino: High Sustainable Quality, related to the Rural Development Program 2014 - 2020 of the Tuscany Region. Copernico, together with other partner organizations (CIA Toscana, the GESAAF and DISPAA department of the University of Florence, CREA and 10 Brunello producers), has worked together to the project 16.2 called Territorial platform of services for sustainable agriculture applied to vine-vine farms in Montalcino (OENOSMART), which envisages the idea of developing a territorial support system for business decisions able to manage digitally production processes.
During the PIF project were carried out analysis and monitoring studies of vineyards and olive groves, chosen for the experimentation concerning 10 participating olive-growing companies. Specifically, Copernico has defined the methods of data collection in the field, in order to achieve an efficient data collection system to be used on the platform.
Moreover, he carried out studies on vegetation through aerial surveys: multispectral with elaboration of vegetation indices to obtain concrete information on the photosynthetic activity of plants and aerial surveys to recreate the regional planning and to create three-dimensional models and ortho-images with high precision detail, with an average resolution of 4 cm/px.
From the research and development of the Oenosmart platform, Copernico has been involved in the development of an innovative commercial software called "Agrinex", able to manage large portions of territory at the district and regional level and to provide services concerning crop management, economic management, product traceability and company profiling.
Based on the studies and research carried out, as part of the Oenosmart project, Copernico has developed a whole range of other functions besides scientific analysis and monitoring crops. In detail, "Agrinex" manages an unlimited number of companies and through interface Protocols, with the regional agencies for rural development in agriculture (ARTEA - AVEPA - AGREA ...), is able to download in real time, for each company, graphical crop plans and data related to individual parcels.
In order to provide each company with a Big-Data collection a complete knowledge framework, Copernico has developed vegetation, pedological and meteoclimatic analysis models, to guarantee companies the management and planning of activities to carry out in the field, regarding georeferenced processing, defining the actual costs of treatments and compiling the digital fields book.
The experimental activity of Copernico continues also within the "Smash project": 1st classified project and financed within the framework of the POR FESR Toscana 2014-2020, for the construction of an integrated robotic ecosystem consisting of a terrestrial mobile unit (AgroBot), a soil monitoring unit (Plantoid), a flying unit (FlyBot) and a unit service on the edge of the field (AncillaryBot) for the monitoring and sustainable management of agricultural crops (vineyard and spinach).
In 2017 Copernico participated to the presentation of the following projects:
• within the RDP 2014/2020 of the Tuscany Region, 6 projects Sub-measure 16.2
- PIF in collaboration with CIA Toscana (CIPA-AT Grosseto) and the GESAAF Department of the University of Florence; two projects have been approved and in the ranking list for future funding
• within the framework of the European Innovation Partnership regarding the productivity and sustainability of agriculture of 3 operating group strategic plans, 2 of which in collaboration with CIA Toscana and the GESAAF Department of the University of Florence and 1 with CREA (Council for Research in Agriculture and Analysis of Agricultural Economics). All the projects have been approved and in the ranking list for future funding.
The Platform has been recognized and validated as a case study by the Tuscany Region and which has been presented to the European Commission at the following events:
• at the conference Agricoltura e Impresa 4.0 in Florence on 23th January 2018
• at the conference Montalcino: High Sustainable Quality - The technologies of Precision Farming in the experience of the Oenosmart Project" in Montalcino on February 24th 2018
• at the debate with the beneficiaries of the cohesion policy at the conference What future for the cohesion policy after 2020? Dialogue with citizens organized by the Tuscany Region with the European Committee of the Regions and the European Commission in Florence on 11th May 2018
• at the conference Photonics for Agriculture in Florence on 16th May 2018, which is part of the two-day conference Watify - Agritech: agriculture at the center of the digital economy in Florence on May 16th and in Alberese with the conference Precision Farming Technologies on 17th May 2018
