University Mediterranea of Reggio Calabria

Organisation type:
University
Country:
Italy
Short name:
DA-UNIRC
Description:

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry Resources, Environment, Livestock, Agricultural Engineering,
Food (AGRARIA) has been operative since November 2012 and has gathered the three Departments of the
Faculty of Agraria at the Mediterranean University of Reggio Calabria (http://www.agraria.unirc.it/). The Department carries out
educational activities and it is oriented towards the formation of qualified professional figures able to
operate successfully in the work and research markets. The training program consists of teaching activities
including 3 courses of the Bachelor’s Degree (Agriculture,
Forestry and Food Technology), Master’s Degree (3) and it includes an International Ph.D. Study in
"Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences and Technologies " organized in 3 curricula.
The Department Agraria develops its research activities with a view to advancing the knowledge of
agricultural, forestry, zootechnical, food, environmental and energy systems, strategically important fields
of activity at national level, and in the projects of investment and development of the "Convergence
objective Regions", mainly of Calabria Region. More generally, the Department deals with all the
socio-economic and productive tissue in the region. The approach is multidisciplinary, recognizing the
reality in which today the agriculture operates requires a continuous research for technological
development and innovation.
divided into 13 full Professors, 26 Associate Professors and 30 researchers, belonging to all scientific
disciplinary sectors of the AGR area: Agricultural Economics, Agronomy, Field, Orchards and Forestry
Crops, Agricultural Chemistry and Genetics, Crop Protection, Agricultural Engineering, Food
Technologies and Microbiology, and Zootechnics. Almost all scientific disciplinary sectors with a long-time
experience in the area of expertise will be involved in the project.
The research activities are characterized by the presence of the above-mentioned scientific areas within
which studies, analyzes and experiments relating to agriculture, food, territory and environment are
carried out. In particular, basic and applied research ranges from the study and application of technical,
economic and legal instruments in the fields of agriculture, forestry systems, environmental protection,
valorization of natural and anthropic resources, valorization of typical and traditional productions (with
reference to the factors and features characterizing the Calabrian agroforestry territory). Finally, the
exploitation of the agricultural
and forestry resources of the Calabrian Region with a view to a multifunctional approach; crop protection
and to the study and exploitation of biodiversity, landscape and hydrogeological safety are taken into
account.
The integration among the main sectors of Agricultural Sciences is indeed essential to improve many
aspects of agricultural, food and no-food, productions safeguarding biodiversity and conservation of
natural resources in a general context of environmental sustainability and protection, also thanks to the
recycling of residues. The researches involve aspects ranging from a molecular level to systemic and
integrated level, in close relation with environmental issues. Technological approaches include the use of
traditional methodologies (biological, chemical, physical, informatics and engineering) integrated with
innovative approaches using "omics" and computer-systems methods to develop management and
predictive models.
The Department Agraria includes thematic laboratories, suitably equipped for the realization of all the
activities provided for this project. Particularly important for the project are the following:
- Agronomy and Field Cultivations
-Arboriculture and Orchard Cultivations
-Agricultural Chemistry
-Food Chemistry
-Rural Buildings and Agroforestry Territory
