The Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania (CIHEAM/MAICh) is a constituent Institute of the International Centre of Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM). CIHEAM is an Intergovernmental Organization comprised by four Institutes (MAI) located in Bari-Italy, Chania-Greece, Montpellier-France and Zaragosa-Spain, that contribute in establishing a Mediterranean agricultural research area.
CIHEAM MAICh focuses on the provision of postgraduate education and the implementation of high standard research at regional, national, Mediterranean and European level in the fields of Business Economics; Food Quality; Geoinformation in Environmental Management; Horticultural Genetics and Biotechnology; and Sustainable Agriculture.
The Institute has a long tradition in tackling agriculture and food related issues, under the general scope of enhancing sustainable use and management of land and water resources through the development of innovative technologies and management practices and their transfer to business. The activities cover different scales of application and allow a multilevel approach by means of the interaction of agronomic, engineering, socio-economic and institutional aspects.
The mandate of CIHEAM MAICh is to constitute an instrument of cooperation between the countries of the Mediterranean in the domains of post-graduate agricultural education and the promotion of agricultural research, the cooperation with institutions and businesses towards the implementation of key EU and/or national priorities.
The Institute maintains close links with academics and prestigious higher education and research Institutes. It has successfully participated in or/and coordinated numerous EU and national competitively funded programs, and has organized EU and International seminars. CIHEAM MAICh contributes in the task of establishing a Mediterranean agricultural research area through its involvement in numerous scientific research programmes (particularly under the European Union’s Framework Programmes) in close collaboration with national partners in the North and South Mediterranean.
The Department of Business Economics and Management of MAICh, through its long participation in a considerable number of research and demonstration projects, has gained extensive experience in the fields of the marketing and trade of agricultural products, agribusiness management, food chain analysis, tourist behaviour analysis, etc.
The Department of Geoinformation in Environmental Management is focusing on research employing remotely sensed and Earth Observation data, for monitoring the Earth’s land cover and primarily, vegetation and agricultural crops, and in many cases, within Precision Agriculture methods. The source of data includes field hyperspectral measurements, RPAS multispectral data as well as satellite optical and radar data.
