S.C.D.V.V. Murfatlar is a public institution which operates under the supervision of the Romanian Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences, with general scientific competence in the fields of researches in viticulture and enology.
S.C.D.V.V. Murfatlar is located in the middle of the vineyard (17000 ha) with the same name that is spreading on the central hilly area of the Dobrogea (S-E of Romania). Since more than a century, beginning with the 1907, at Murfatlar were established the first plantations for research the growing the vine in the specific condiotions of water shortage of the Dobrogea area. The activities are conducted in two sectors RESEARCH AND EXTENSION. RESEARCH SECTOR is formed of next laboratories: amelioration and multiplication of biological material; technologies in viticulture; plant protection ; technologies for processing of grapes and the wines chemistry.
Key areas of research are :
- creation of clones and varieties adapted to ecosystems in Dobrogea, resistant to drought and to disease and pest attack;
- specific technologies regarding the optimization of using the typical ecopedoclimatic resources to Dobrogea;
- biological control of the major pests in the vineyard;
- technologies for organic cultivation of some vines plantations ;
- modern methods of analysis and quality control of wines.
S.C.D.V.V. Murfatlar has laboratory facilities for analysis on grapes and wine and it operates in the viticulture research field, with particular attention on vineyard environment, extension and technology transfer.
In present, in S.C.D.V.V. Murfatlar working 12 researchers which are involved in eight national research projects and two european.
S.C.D.V.V. Murfatlar exploiting experimental plots, demonstrative lots, and periodically organize meetings with local farmers.
Currently, the land administered by S.C.D.V.V. Murfatlar consists of 160 ha of which 115 ha productive plantations, 15 ha – young vineyards, 10 ha rootstocks and 20 ha nursery.
