The Young Researchers Boot camp of the ERA-NET ICT AGRI FOOD, was held as an online event on the 28 of April and the 19 - 20 of May 2022. The workshop was hosted by Julia Gajo from the Agricultural Ministry of Denmark supported by Dr. Babette Regierer from SB Science Management UG. The aim of the boot camp was “How to write a good EU proposal” providing the participants the chance to work on the hands-on example of the newly launched call of ICT AGRO FOOD. The bootcamp was also an opportunity for young researchers to connect and work together across disciplines and countries. With an introductory day the scene was set with presentations of different supporting initiatives, an overview for the upcoming call with information “behind the scenes of a funder” accompanied by a key note speech of a scientific expert on multi-stakeholder research. Additionally, an introduction to general principles of proposal writing was given. Four weeks later, the intensive two-day Proposal Writing Boot camp with comprehensive group work and exercises provided the participants an effective training not only on practicalities of writing a competitive research proposal, but also how to communicate and work across disciplinary boundaries in an international environment. The participants agreed to stay in contact preparing for future joint activities and thus research and development projects.
The use of the open 2022 ICT AGRI FOOD joint call as a real-world example was a great added value for the participants. The example helped to illustrate what the funder wants, what are requirements and how to design a research proposal and allowed a very practical and hands-on approach and also added credibility. It was also a unique opportunity for the bootcamp participants that a representative of one of the funders of the ERA-Net ICT AGRI FOOD was present - the “behind the scenes of a funding agency” information that was provided by Julia Gajo and the examples she shared with the audience represent an outstanding added value that no other course could offer.
