William Whelan-Curtin (publishes as Liam O'Faolain) is a Senior Lecturer at MTU and leader of the Nanophotonics Group with the Centre for Advanced Photonics & Process Analysis (CAPPA). MTU was created on 1st January 2021, as a merger between Cork Institute of Technology and Institute of Technology Tralee, and the CAPPA centre spearheads photonics research at the University. The group includes over 35 researchers and postgraduate students, conducting both applied and fundamental research on photonics for applications as diverse as telecommunications, medical devices, food and pharmaceutical manufacturing. Since 2006, CAPPA has been awarded over €32M funding, published over 147 peer-reviewed papers and has been involved in 16 European projects (coordinating 8). MTU holds the “Excellence in Human Resources for Researchers – HRS4R” badge from the EU commission, and a Bronze Award from the Athena Swan gender equality initiative.
