Azienda Agricola Clemente Rocco Luigi Viale Kennedy 59, 75024 Montescaglioso (MT) Italy Email: olioclemente@gmail.com Brief history The Clemente family has been working for more than 50 years in agriculture, specialising in producing artichokes, oranges, other fruit and vegetables, and olive oil. The farm was founded by Antonio Clemente and is now managed by his son Rocco and his daughter Vita. It is located in Southern Italy, in the region of Basilicata, between the towns of Montescaglioso and Bernalda, close to Matera. This area, called Lago del Lupo (Wolf lake) was once owned by Benedictine Monks, which already in the tenth century were producing here olive oil and cereals. The Clemente farm has always kept only part of the olives harvested to produce small quantities of olive oil for own consumption, developing a strong expertise and keeping a very high quality standard. In 2011 Rocco and Vita decided to start a transformation process of the farm, investing in new organic implants and in the improvement of the current ones. Following the very good feedback received by professional tasters, in 2012 they decided to increase the production of oil and to bottle it for the very first time. In 2013, at the second year of bottling, the oil received its first prizes. This step was done keeping the traditional farming processes and the traditional care for quality, improving all aspects which contribute to raise the quality bar: collection method, processing and storage. Quality and certifications The farm is certified as organic (EC regulation 834/07/CE) by Bioagricert and checked regularly. It is a member of a large cooperative, and as such its production is controlled regularly and has to comply with the standards of large retailers as well as organic regulations. The farm delivers to the cooperative organic fruit and vegetables. The products which are not delivered to the cooperative (e.g. olive oil) go through independent, non-compulsory quality checks. In 2012 and 2013, all quality indicators matched or went beyond the thresholds set by the European regulations and beyond the thresholds set for high quality oils. Our extra virgin olive oil The 2013 Olive Oil has received, so far, three important recognitions. In March 2014 it has received the Gold Medal at the 2014 Biol international prize (one the most important international prizes for organic olive oils, http://premiobiol.it/en/ ). In the same month it has been finalist, representing the region of Basilicata, in the national prize Ercole Olivario (one of the 22 organic oils to be selected for the final, www.ercoleolivario.net). Finally, the oil has been included in the prestigious 2014 Slow Food guide to high-quality extra-virgin oils (see www.slowfood.com). The oil has also been tested by Metepontum Agrobios and rated 83.4/100 for its organoleptic qualities. The oil is limpid, its colour is intense yellow, it has an elegant olfactory profile with notes of cut grass. Its taste is harmonious, with a medium fruity taste, light bitterness and medium pungency. It has little unctuosity at the touch. The olives of four different cultivars(coratina, ogliarola del bradano, leccino and biancolilla) are processed within a maximum of 24 hours from the collection. The processing method is the traditional cold pressing, with temperatures constantly below 27°C. In order to keep its original qualities the oil is stored in stainless steel tanks inertized with nitrogen. The tanks are located in a protected and monitored environment with ideal temperature. This avoids the process of oxidation, which reduces the organoleptic quality of olive oil. For this reason, the oil is bottled just before shipping. The partner for the processing, the storage and the bottling of the oil is Oleificio F.lli Quarto, Matera, the most advanced, eco-sustainable oil mill in the area. The oil mill processes only organic products, and as such any possible contamination is avoided.
