The LRG investigates the extraction of detailed 3D geoinformation from newest Earth observation technology (e.g. 3D laser scanning). Furthermore, research emphasis is put on the exploitation and fusion of crowdsourced human (e.g. from Web 2.0) and 3D technical sensor data enabling near real-time 3D mapping and applications. A major focus lies on the development of GIS-based algorithms for 3D spatial data processing and analysis making use of the full sensor data stream (e.g. LiDAR backscatter). It is aimed at increasing the understanding of geographical phenomena: The developed geoinformation technologies and methods are applied to (interdisciplinary) research questions in natural landscapes (e.g. agriculture, geomorphology, geoarchaeology and forestry) and man-made landscapes (e.g. solar potential assessment and hedonic price modeling).
