Wilfried Winiwarter studies biogeochemical cycles, focusing on the cycle of nitrogen compounds. His interest in the topic derives from work on anthropogenic and natural impacts on the trace gas composition of the atmosphere, where he worked on quantifying emissions from multiple sources and developing emission abatement strategies, also considering future scenarios. He was appointed professor of environmental chemistry at the University of Zielona Gora in 2017, while maintaining a position as a Senior Research Scholar with the International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis in Laxenburg, Austria. The latter position he held since 2003, in parallel with positions at the Austrian Institute of Technology (till 2012) and a professorship in systems sciences at the University of Graz in Austria. Prof. Winiwarter holds a habilitation (venia legendi, full privilege of academic teaching) from Vienna University of Technology. He also serves as a deputy chair to the Climate and Clean Air Commission, Austrian Academy of Sciences.
