My research is multi-disciplinary, primarily in the area of novel processing and antimicrobial technologies with a focus on applications to food safety and preservation; with crossover to bio-medically relevant issues including antibiotic resistant pathogens and Biofilms. I collaborate closely with Industry across food and biomedical sectors. I have been successful in gaining funding awards at a national and international level, securing ca €3 million in funding, including an SFI Investigator award, SFI-RCUK Investigator awards, networks and Industry funding. I also have a strong contributory record as a collaborator and in infrastructural grants. With a vision to build on the SFI-RCUK grant, I was awarded funding from IRC to establish a Network in the area of Plasma Science and Technology. I have gained international recognition in the research areas of natural antimicrobials and non-thermal technologies for microbial control as well as life cycle effects of novel processes; evidenced by invitations to present at major international conferences; join committees; evaluate international funding schemes, write book chapters, research papers and funding applications. I am recognised as a highly cited researcher through Web of Science- Clarivate. My teaching and learning approach is largely social constructivist, using the virtual learning environment to promote inclusion, participation and scaffolded self-directed learning.
