Dr. Curran is the Director of the MSc Environmental Technology degree programme at University College Dublin (UCD). His research interests includes waste management and air quality. He leads the EU Horizon 2020 Agrocycle project on recycling and valorising waste from the agri-food sector with 23 partners across Europe plus three in China. Dr. Curran was a Fulbright Scholar (TechImpact Award 2017-18) at North Carolina State University. He is a graduate of UCD's Engineering programme, holding a BE (Ag & Food), MEngSc (Environmental Engineering) and a PhD in Biosystems Engineering. He worked in production and environmental management in the food industry for a number of years before returning to UCD as an academic staff member in Biosystems and Food Engineering. His teaching centres on the application of environmental engineering in the agrifood and bioresource industries. He has received teaching awards from both UCD and the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE), and research awards from both UCD (President's Award) and the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) (Superior Paper Award). He served as the Chairman of the Environmental Sciences Association of Ireland (ESAI) (2014-16).
