Assem Abu Hatab is an associate professor and lecturer at the Department of Economics in SLU. He is also the coordinator of Global Development at the Faculty of Natural Resources & Agricultural Sciences at SLU. Assem is an applied economist (Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics) with broad empirical interests and a focus food systems and agricultural sectors in developing countries and their interlinkages with food security and sustainable development. In 2017, Assem was selected by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as a Lead Author for Chapter 7 (Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use) of the 6th Assessment Report. Assem has been a coordinator for- and a partner in several national and international projects including the following: DEVILAG (Erasmus Plus 2018-2497/001-001, Steering Migration through Sustainable development: Euro-Egyptian program for Agriculture and Rural development); ASKASIA (EU/ Erasmus Mundus Action 3, Erasmus Mundus Alumni Employability Study in the Field of Agriculture and Related Life Sciences); FACEPA (FP7 212292, Farm accountancy cost estimation and policy analysis of European agriculture); TRUSTEE (FP7 ERA-Net RURAGRI 235-175, Towards rural synergies and trade-offs between economic development and ecosystem services); FADNTOOL(FP7-265616, Development of modelling tools based on Farm Accountancy Data network adapted to assess the dynamic impacts of the Common Agricultural Policy). Moreover, he is the Co-PI for an ongoing research project funded by the Swedish Research Council (FORMAS- 2016-00350, The dynamics of urban sprawl: Land-use changes, food supply & sustainable agricultural production systems in the arid & semi-arid zones).
