Emo van Halsema
Felan Innovations BV

Emo van Halsema has a scientific background in (bio)chemical engineering and aqueous electrolyte thermodynamics (Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands, 1988-1998). Until 2013 he founded several companies in The Netherlands and Indonesia with a focus on mathematical modelling, software development and the design and realisation of various measuring systems and pilot plants, e.g. for the large scale recovery of native proteins from potato waste streams. Emo is mentioned as an inventor in more than 15 patents. In 2015, Emo co-founded Datamole (Prague, Czech Republic), a company that specialises in applying machine learning and artificial intelligence to industrial challenges. Datamole currently employs over 60 machine learning and AI specialists and developers, and is still growing. Emo's role within Datamole is to develop new business and to coach the Datamole management and staff. In 2016, Emo founded Felan Innovations (Renswoude, The Netherlands). The company focuses on innovative developments of sensors and measuring systems, mainly for the food and life sciences industry. Felan Innovation collaborates strongly with specialised companies and research groups on data driven sensor design, a process that requires a combination of hardware design (electronics, optics, mechatronics ...) and both white box mathematical modelling and machine learning and AI techniques. Felan Innovations collaborates with several industrial partners on the development of web-based tools that allow for using predictive mathematical models to describe (physico)chemical properties of food products and on the development of a high throughput screening reactor system. This laboratory device aims to facilitate laboratory experiments and generate large amounts of data that can be used for various purposes, such as stability experiments, shelf life studies, taste experiments, quality control and model validation.
